The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission was established at the beginning of 2008 as successor to the Jordanian Nuclear Energy Commission. The development and promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.were transferred to the Commission. The work of the Atomic Energy Commission focused on two main areas, namely, the construction of nuclear power plants for the production of electricity and desalination of water using those nuclear reactors, and also the project to use the natural nuclear resources found in Jordan, namely, the uranium. The Commission works to implement the vision and overall strategy of a peaceful nuclear energy program and the various application stages leading to the production of electricity using nuclear reactors, and using them as principal source for desalination of water. The Commission shall pay particular attention to build and support human resources in leadership, science and technology, and qualified staff and capacities of Jordan in various fields of nuclear science and its applications, through grants and missions, seminars and scientific programs, and specialized training. Also the Commission will be working on the technical basis necessary for the extraction of nuclear materials, the production of heavy-water, and setting up the installations and facilities necessary for the extraction of these elements and their mining, as well as the establishment of investment projects including the establishment of companies in the field of nuclear energy applications and management, such as electric power and water desalination stations, and the establishment of nuclear reactors and accelerators for various peaceful purposes and for radiation technology.
